Nanny Performance Reviews

Like any corporate job, nannying requires a great deal of check-ins and evaluations to ensure both the family and the nanny remain on the same page. If this is your first performance review as either a nanny or employer, please use the following tips to conduct the most effective review.

Do some reflecting on your own before any discussion

Whether you are the nanny or the employer, do a self evaluation to determine your own performance, areas of improvement, or goals for yourself. This doesn’t have to be a long process, but can give you some perspective during the formal evaluation.

Discuss contract, compensation, and overall performance

This is a good time to print out your original contract from a year ago and go over bullet points around the big ticket items. Are there duties that have been added or subtracted from the nannies line of work that could increase or decrease compensation? Whether you’ve moved from Boston to Washington D.C., added a new baby to the family, or increased household tasks while the children are in school, compensation likely needs to be discussed.

Discuss areas of improvement, things that are going well, and things that need to be tweaked

In this industry, things are constantly changing within the home. Be sure to sandwich some constructive feedback in between some comments above strengths. We want both parties to feel really positive in this evaluation, so be sure to list some strengths.

In a human position such as this one, it is natural for there to be some bumps in the road. While this is completely normal, it can add up to be something that can’t be recovered from. Stay on top of these things and form an open line of communication to ensure everyone is aware.

If your nanny is always on time and punctual, let them know how much you appreciate this. Maybe your nanny has incredible talent with your busy toddler, make sure you let them know how valuable their work is. If you are finding some frustration with lack of cleanliness, differing discipline approaches, or relationship boundaries, approach these head on.

Ultimately, be open and receptive to feedback

Both sides should provide feedback and be able to receive it. We want these relationships to be long-lasting and the only way to achieve that is to continue talking and checking in! Good luck!
